Discovery Plan Comparisons – Newsletter April 2021

Discovery Plan Comparisons – April 2021

Basic Plan Comparisons

While plan upgrades are usually allowed once a year in January, most members can tell if a particular plan is working for them, by April or May. This year, plan changes can also be made when the July contribution increase is published. If you are considering a plan change, here are the basic Discovery Plan Comparisons.

Please note that this comparison below is not enough information to make your decision, as you need to monitor your benefit usage through the year to give you an accurate idea of what your annual needs might be. Different plans have different annual Savings amounts and this will also influence your plan decision.

Discovery And The Covid Vaccine

If you have been screened (in person or via phone) by a doctor and referred for a Covid test, your test is covered by Discovery. The Global Outbreak Benefit covers two tests per person per year, and if more are required you can apply for approval as a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB). The Antigen test is also available: two per year for all members, four if you are a healthcare provider and unlimited if approved as PMB.

The COVID-19 vaccine and administration of the vaccine is covered as a PMB. All Discovery Health Medical Scheme members will be covered for the vaccine, in accordance with the prioritisation framework and the three phase roll-out plan as established by the Ministerial Advisory Committee and National Department of Health.

You will be required to register on the National Department of Health’s Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS), and make use of one of the accredited vaccination sites. You should also register on the Discovery COVID-19 Vaccination Portal The list of accredited facilities will be published by the National Department of Health.

Discovery Gap Cover

A recent hospital event gives us the following example:

  • Total hospital invoice: R61 528.93
  • Discovery payment: R45 419.08

The difference of R16 109.85 was mostly due to the specialists charging more than the medical aid tariff. This is exactly where Gap cover would cover the shortfall.

Discovery has the following Gap Cover options, available to all Discovery Health members excluding those on KeyCare plans:

  • Discovery Gap Cover: Comprehensive and Core, including in– and out-of-hospital shortfalls and extended cover for cancer related claims, scopes and scans, as well as international travel.
  • Supplementary Illness Benefit: lump sum payout for high cost treatments, premium waiver, home support and annual payback.
  • Discovery Gap Cover and Supplementary Illness Benefit combo.

MoveToGive Charity Donations

Spend your Discovery Miles on Vitality MoveToGive charity Wings & Wishes.

Since its inception in 2006, when Wings & Wishes flew three to four children per month, today they transport at least three children and an accompanying adult every single day. But it isn’t just about providing transport. Families are met by a volunteer who will help them with check-in procedures and any support needed.

Children receive a pack of basic essentials while in hospital, including pyjamas, toiletries, colouring books, crayons and any other comfort items – including a special stuffed toy named Wellie.

With Discovery Vitality and MoveToGive, you can help a child get critical care.

How far your Discovery Miles will take a child:

  • 400 Discovery Miles – Contribute towards local transport for a child in need of specialized medical treatment.
  • 1200 Discovery Miles – Help Wings and Wishes provide interprovincial transport for a child in need of specialized medical treatment.
  • 2400 Discovery Miles – Help a child and their parent / caregiver to access specialized medical treatment with Wings and Wishes.
