“Generation Equality, Realizing Women’s Rights For An Equal Future”

Woman’s Month August 2021: The Covid-19 crisis has highlighted both the importance of their contributions and the disproportionate impact on women during the pandemic.

Women are on the front-line as health care workers, caregivers, and community organisers. Women are keeping essential services operating by working in stores, supermarkets, and pharmacies.

Most women are working from home whilst managing a household, and in many instances assisting their children with on-line learning.

  • Women have been impacted by the closure of schools.
  • They take on extra childcare responsibilities and resulting in a difficult balancing act for many women.
  • Women also have continued to do most of the unpaid work in the home.

South African women have been specifically affected by the economic impact of the pandemic. They are over-represented in the worst hit sectors which are retail, hospitality, and food services. Many have been made redundant or had their salaries reduced. The fact that many women work part-time has also placed them at greater risk of job disruption.

Mental Health

Significant gender-based effects on mental health have been found in women due to greater domestic duties and increased levels of psychological stress. Much of this is due to rising financial insecurity and anxiety over the course of the crisis.

Domestic Abuse

An increase in domestic abuse particularly during lockdown periods has been seen worldwide.

Woman’s Month August 2021 – Gender Equality

Gender equality has been slow, and the Covid-19 pandemic has reinforced this gap with the risk of women’s rights rolling further back.

Generation Equality

Generation Equality is a global campaign, which calls for equal pay, equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, an end to all forms of violence against women, health care services that respond to their needs and their equal participation in politics and decision making in all areas of life.
